I don’t know about you but there are some days when there seems to be so much going on around me in life that I’m unconscious of what is really taking place.
Have you ever been there?
Here’s what I mean…I get so caught up with the things I have to do that I miss all that’s happening around me. You know, things like work, deadlines, appointments, face booking, twittering, the kids, making dinner, working out…. I could go on but I think you get the point.
I have recently rediscovered something that I did frequently before but have gotten away from of late.
What is it?
It’s taking the time to slow down. Hit the pause button. Check out.
Time for yourself is one thing that should not be taken for granted. In the past my time to “clock out” was on Sundays. Recently, Sundays have become a time of renewal…recreation (aka; re-creation)…rest.
So this Sunday I was “clocked out” and enjoying time at church. The message of the day was “Unity”. How are we connected in life? To our family, our friends, our God?
How do we feel when something is “off” and the connection is disrupted? The Unity is gone.
The short story version of this is that we all long to be United, to be in Unity with life, to be connected. When we are in Unity and connected we are in the flow of life. Everything happens just the way it’s meant to and it’s all good.
When we are united we are in the present moment. We are conscious. Our heart is full and we come from a place of Love. We give of ourselves with the expectation of nothing in return.
OK, fast forward… Sunday night…still “clocked out”.
Terri and I decided to watch a movie that’s been out for a long time and won many awards. The choice tonight, Dances With Wolves.
Talk about a Tribe!
Kevin Costner plays the main role. He’s a Union soldier and he’s requested to be stationed at the farthest outpost on the new frontier. Essentially, out in the middle of the vast Great Plains…alone.
His horse is his best friend. Before long a lone wolf, he names Two Socks, becomes his friend. In time, he meets a Tribe of Sioux Indians. He overcomes the language barrier, the label of “white man” in our country, and he begins to build a connection with them. A connection towards Unity.
Being in this Tribe he begins to share his experiences, his knowledge and his wisdom. The Sioux in turn share their knowledge and wisdom. They work together to survive. They become brothers…family. They trust each other.
So you’re probably wondering where this is going and what’s my point?
My point is this…take time to unplug in your life. Slow down…stop and smell the roses. When you do you just might become conscious again. Conscious enough to be present to see and hear what is playing all around you. The message we are often looking for is right in front of us…if we stop to look.
We all want Unity in our life. We want to belong. It’s a human desire. We have the opportunity to connect and belong in so many ways today.
You are probably in more than one Tribe. Be it online, at your church, place of work, your family, the non profit you support… we all long to belong somewhere. Wherever that is be sure to give freely of your time, your talents and skills for the betterment of all. Expect nothing in return and you will receive so much more.
Be United. Be connected. Be in the flow of life!
Most importantly, be present, be conscious.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you “clock out” How do you hit the pause button and how has this impacted your life.
Also, please share this with your friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter. I appreciate it.
Until next time, Live Your Best Life!

Don – It is so important to “clock out” once in awhile. It is so easy to get caught up in our day to day routines of “all we have ti get done”. I enjoy doing yard work and taking walks without carrying along my phone, ipod etc. It really gives me time to think:)

One of my favorite things to do is “scratch in the dirt”. Doing work in the yard and gardening are great ways to unplug.
Thanks Glyna.

Such great advice here, Don. NOW is all we’ve really got and if we are so busy working toward the future that we miss the now, we’ll never see the abundance that surrounds us in each moment. Thank you for the great advice to hit the “pause” button. I love the analogy.

Hey Don,
Great post. We all get so very busy with our lives, form business, to kids, to friends , to chores that we forget the need for rest. Rest is crucial for all things in life. Thanks for the gentle reminder.

Yeah Scott, we can easily get caught up in the day to day and forget to take of ourselves. I few years back I heard the subtle difference between recreation and re creation. The great thing is that you can accomplish both if you take the time to pause and rest.
Thanks for stopping by.

You’re right Val, it has been a good week. It’s amazing what happens when you’re present and focused.

We all want to accomplish so much… do so much… make it all happen and happen ASAP.
We press, struggle and strive.
We just have to back off sometimes and realize that most of what we want to accomplish can’t compare with all the things we have already… most of which have NOTHING to do with money or business success.
Great to be privy to your insight and wisdom, Don. Keep us in the loop as you move forward!

Don,
The timing of this post is amazing. There’s always so much going on… so much to do… so many needs… Until you take a deep breath and relax. Then you can focus on what’s really important.
Weather it’s the one thing you must accomplish to the 2 hours of down time you need to have with your family. Whatever it is and wherever it is… it’s important to be there!
Thanks for the reminder to slow down once in a while. Less is more…

My best method to clock out is by taking short walks. This may sound silly but as I take some short walks, my mind focuses on the present moment, what I mean is that I pay attention to the things around me.

That’s a great way to clock out. I enjoy going walks too. It always seems to clear the mind.
Thanks Walter for your contribution to my post.

Taking time to unplug is essential ~ I notice that if I’ve gone too long without, I get tense, stressed, easily irritated. So I schedule in my unplugging ~ daily meditation, and most days putting on my headphones and sweating it out. Then there is also the mandatory hour of family time daily(sometimes more but never less).
Great insights, thanks for sharing Don!

It sounds like you can be similar to me in some regards…surprised? I don’t always see it coming but Terri is sure to let me know when I’m getting a little “cranky”.
Sounds like you have some great things in place and you make them a priority in your schedule.

Hi Don,
Unplugging is so essential for success, and yet for entrepreneurs who are driven to go, go, go, unplugging is one of the hardest things to do. Ironically, NOT unplugging from time to time can become an obstacle to breaking through the next level.
I was just talking with a friend about this very topic, and she said that often when entrepreneurs take time to “check out,” lots of things begin to really take off for them while they are gone.
It sounds like you are doing what is necessary to spend time away from your business and nurture yourself with what feeds your soul: family and friends and downtime. I need to do more of this myself, and am grateful to have reminders like this one of how important it is to take a break.
Thanks, Don!
